State FSSAI License


The State FSSAI License applies to medium-sized food businesses operating within a single state.


Who Needs a State License?


  • Food businesses with an annual turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore

  • Medium-sized manufacturers, storage units, transporters, distributors, and retailers

  • Businesses operating in more than one district but within the same state


Key Features


  • Valid for 1 to 5 years

  • Requires more detailed documentation than the Basic License, including proof of premises, list of food products, and food safety management system details

  • Application can be submitted online or offline through the state food safety department

A regional dairy company with a turnover of ₹5 crore operating in multiple districts within Maharashtra must obtain a State FSSAI License.


Central FSSAI License


The Central FSSAI License is for large food businesses or those operating across multiple states.


Who Needs a Central License?


  • Food businesses with an annual turnover exceeding ₹20 crore

  • Importers, exporters, large manufacturers, and food businesses operating in multiple states

  • Food businesses involved in large-scale storage, processing, or distribution

  • Valid for 1 to 5 years

  • Requires comprehensive documentation, including detailed food safety management plans, product specifications, and premises details

  • Application is submitted to the central food safety authority


Example


A multinational food processing company with operations in several states and a turnover of ₹50 crore must obtain a Central FSSAI License.

Choosing the correct FSSAI license depends on:


  • Annual turnover: This is the primary factor determining the license type.

  • Business location: Whether your business operates in one state or multiple states.

  • Nature of business: Manufacturing, storage, distribution, or retail.
